PSHE and RSE at St John’s

Our vision is to nurture happy, healthy, confident and reflective children who develop the knowledge, skills and understanding to thrive in an ever-changing world. Through a rich, inclusive and carefully sequenced PSHE/RSHE curriculum, delivered using the Jigsaw scheme, children will learn about themselves, their relationships with others, their physical and mental health, and how to keep themselves safe. Our curriculum is taught in line with statutory guidance and supports children in developing the knowledge, values and life skills they need to flourish.

We want our children to develop self-awareness, empathy, resilience and respect for others. Through exploring relationships, emotions, diversity, rights and responsibilities, children will learn to value differences, celebrate individuality, challenge stereotypes and make informed, responsible choices. They will develop an understanding of how to build positive relationships, manage challenges and contribute positively to their school, community and wider world.

Through a progressive and age-appropriate curriculum, children will move from recognising their feelings, developing friendships and building a positive sense of self in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), to exploring more complex themes such as mental health, healthy relationships, online safety, personal boundaries, puberty and growing up by the end of Year 6. Learning will be revisited and built upon to ensure that children develop confidence, deepen their understanding and know how to seek help and support when needed.

Our aim is for every child to leave primary school as a confident, compassionate and resilient young person, equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding to make safe and healthy choices, build positive relationships, respect themselves and others, and approach the next stage of their lives with confidence and optimism.
