Music at St John’s
Our vision is to nurture creative, confident and enthusiastic young musicians who develop the knowledge, skills and understanding to appreciate, enjoy and participate in music throughout their lives. Through a rich, inclusive and carefully sequenced music curriculum, delivered using the Sing Up scheme and supported by Charanga, children will develop their musical skills through singing, listening, composing and performing. Our curriculum aims to inspire a love of music, encourage self-expression and provide all children with opportunities to discover and develop their musical talents.
We want our children to develop creativity, confidence, collaboration and a lifelong appreciation of music. Through exploring a wide range of musical styles, genres, traditions and instruments, children will learn to express themselves, listen critically, work together and appreciate music from different cultures and backgrounds. They will develop an understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music and learn to perform with increasing accuracy, expression and confidence.
Through a progressive and engaging curriculum, children will build their musical knowledge and skills from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through to Year 6. In Year 4, all children have the opportunity to take part in whole-class brass instrument lessons, with the exciting opportunity to take their instruments home to practise and develop their skills further. In Key Stage 2, children can also access small-group instrumental tuition in guitar and drums, enabling them to extend their musical interests and talents. These opportunities support children in developing perseverance, independence and a sense of achievement, while fostering a love of making music together.
Our aim is for every child to leave St John’s as a confident, creative and enthusiastic young musician, equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding to appreciate music, express themselves through performance and composition, and embrace opportunities to enjoy and participate in music throughout their lives.
