MFL (French) at St John’s

Our vision is to inspire confident, curious and enthusiastic linguists who develop the skills and understanding to communicate in another language and appreciate the world beyond their own. Through a rich, inclusive and carefully sequenced Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum, supported by Language Angels, children at St John’s Primary will develop their French speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, whilst fostering a love of languages and an appreciation of different cultures.

We want our children to develop confidence, resilience and respect for others, celebrating cultural diversity and recognising the value of learning a new language. Through progressive learning, children will build their French vocabulary, pronunciation and grammatical understanding, applying their skills in meaningful contexts as they progress through the school.

A highlight of their journey at St John’s is the opportunity to visit Paris for a week in Year 6, bringing their learning to life. From exploring the Eiffel Tower and cruising along the Seine to a Tour de Stade tour and a magical day at Disneyland Paris, children can practise their French in real-life situations whilst experiencing French culture first-hand.

Our aim is for every child to leave St John’s as a confident and culturally aware young person, equipped with the foundations for future language learning, a curiosity about the wider world and a lasting enthusiasm for discovering new languages and cultures.
