At St John’s, our vision is to inspire curious, articulate, and reflective communicators who develop a lifelong passion for reading, writing, and language. Through a rich, ambitious, and carefully sequenced English curriculum, children build a deep foundation in vocabulary, master core grammatical skills, and explore high-quality literature that sparks imagination and curiosity.
We want our children to speak with confidence, read for pleasure and insight, and write with a clear authorial voice. By immersing pupils in rich model texts, our children learn how to express their ideas clearly, adapt their writing for different audiences, and appreciate the power of words across both fiction and non-fiction.
Through our systematic ‘Vocabulary -Skills -Drafting’ sequence, children build sentence security and writing confidence step-by-step. From oral rehearsal, dual coding, and foundational sentence mechanics in Key Stage 1 to analysing sophisticated authorial craft and structuring extended texts in Key Stage 2, every child is supported through adaptive teaching to reach high expectations.
Our aim is for every child to leave St John’s as a confident, creative, and critical communicator - equipped with the rich vocabulary, strong writing skills, and love of literature needed to thrive in their next stage of education and beyond.
