We want our children to explore how things work, understand the needs of different users and discover how design and technology shape the world around them. Through practical, hands-on experiences, children will learn to research, generate ideas, develop designs, select appropriate tools and materials, and create products that meet a specific purpose. They will develop technical knowledge, learn to work safely and accurately, and evaluate and improve their work through testing, reflection and problem-solving.
By exploring a range of materials, mechanisms, structures, textiles, electrical systems and food preparation techniques, our children will develop an appreciation of creativity, innovation and craftsmanship. They will learn from the work of designers, engineers, chefs and inventors, while considering the importance of sustainability, responsible material choices and the environmental impact of the products we use.
Through progressive learning, children will move from exploring materials, joining and building in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to confidently researching, designing, making and evaluating increasingly complex products by the end of Year 6. They will develop independence, resilience and the ability to adapt their ideas, learning that mistakes and challenges are valuable opportunities to improve.
Our aim is for every child to leave primary school as a confident, imaginative and capable designer and maker, equipped with the practical skills, technical knowledge and creative thinking needed to solve problems, embrace innovation and contribute positively to an ever-changing world.
